What is the one thing that anyone going to the mountains with you should know?
"If I say we’ll reach the summit in one hour, it’ll take two. If I say there won’t be any snow, there will be. If I say it won’t rain, it will. My predictions are usually pretty bad. I’m trying to improve. But I’m still a hopeless optimist. Please forgive me."
If you would be directing a mountaineering movie in the alps, where would you film it and which famous actor/actress would you cast?
"I'd film it on the Weisshorn. One of my favorite mountains which is unfortunately often overshadowed by its famous twin, the Matterhorn. It’d star Christoph Waltz who is being chased down by some malevolent task force for his ability to invert gravity."
What would you ask for if a genie gave you one wish to magically create a new innovative piece of mountaineering gear?
"The motorized rope ascender! You just fell into a crevasse and are hanging on the rope? No worries! Just attach your MRA to the rope and find yourself being pulled up the rope by this amazing device."
Do you regularly slip or fall in the mountains?
"Not too often. But it did already happen to me. The last time was when I thought I had lost my phone on the first trail run we did after arriving in Aosta and went out again to retrace our steps in hope to find it. Fortunately, I was alone, so no one saw me. Otherwise it could have been embarrassing."
If you would not be able to go into the mountains anymore, what would become your main passion in life?
"Graphic design. It imposes no limits on your creativity. Whatever you can think of, you can visualize graphically. Whether that is a representation of data, a fictional landscape, an imaginary character, or an futuristic device. I'd just need some more practice to get better."
